Necrophilia
Necrophilia is defined as a sexual attraction to corpses, which is often characterized by sexual intercourse with corpses. The first use of the term “necrophilia” appears to have been in an 1886 work, Psycopathia Sexualis, by Kraft-Ebing.

There has been little research performed on what actually causes an individual to develop necrophilia, but in 1989 there were several theories that were developed in regard to this mental condition. It is believed that necrophilia is most prevalent in males and can often be attributed to poor self-esteem. It is believed that several individuals have developed the condition because they are afraid of being rejected by women and with a corpse, they are in control.

Another theory is that the person is fearful of dead bodies, but then transforms that fear into a desire. The third theory is that the person is exposed to a corpse and then begins to have sexual fantasies with that corpse.

Although necrophilia is rarely discussed, the condition and practice of necrophilia have a long history that dates back to many ancient cultures. Some cultures practiced necrophilia in an attempt to communicate with the dead. Several forms of evidence of this can be found in works of art through various artifacts such as pottery that depict skeletal figures engaged in sexual activities with live humans.
